While snowfall and road conditions help superintendents decide whether to close schools, temperatures will be the factor to watch on Wednesday and Thursday. Area school leaders look at wind chills of 20 degrees below zero as a strong likelihood of closure. When you're looking at wind chills of minus 20, the issue is the risk for frostbite for the children who are waiting for buses or are walking to school. Area superintendents use a wind chill of 20 degrees below zero as a guideline, though it's not the only factor considered. We also look at road conditions, because we want to make sure the roads are safe for buses and high school drivers to be out on the roads.
Wednesday's predicted high temperature is -7 degrees, according to www.NOAA.gov and wind chills could dip as low as 45 below.
