This post celebrates a wonderful young lady who’s life is memorialized in a scholarship. Donate or apply: Today is Manda’s 39th birthday, and her 5th birthday in heaven. It is bittersweet. I smile to think of Manda in God’s glory where there is no more sadness and no more pain. Selfishly, I miss her. She is my first thought as I wake up and my last thought as I drift off to sleep. When I feel myself sinking into grief, I sense Manda’s disapproval and admonishment to pick myself up and to live in her honor. Today I will mourn, but I will also follow the advice to “be the things you loved most about the people who are gone.” Cheryl Strayed said, “You go on by doing the best you can. You go on by being generous. You go on by being true. You go on by allowing the unbearable days to pass and by allowing the pleasure in other days. You go on by finding a channel for your love and another for your rage.”
Terry and I will go on by volunteering, donating, giving blood, and practicing random acts of kindness. In the past three years, we have awarded 18 scholarships to 10 Jackson County women attending U of M and majoring in a STEM discipline. Rachel Rudd, a three year recipient, will graduate this year with a degree in nursing. Manda would be so proud. Today we will begin taking applications for next year’s scholarships to be awarded on June 1. See Amanda J. Mierzwa Memorial Fund at charitysmith.org to apply or to make a contribution.
Because we are social distancing this year (Manda would have a whole lot to say about those who aren’t😂), we are going to plant a hillside of wildflowers. Manda loved gardening.
