I once asked a very successful woman to share her secret with me. She smiled and said to me.. "I started succeeding when I started leaving small fights for small fighters. I stopped fighting those who gossiped about me... I stopped fighting with my in laws... I stopped fighting for attention... I stopped fighting to meet peoples expectation of me... I stopped fighting for my rights with inconsiderate people.. I stopped fighting to please everyone... I stopped fighting to prove they were wrong about me.... I left such fights for those who have nothing else to fight... And I started fighting for my vision, my dreams, my ideas and my destiny. The day I gave up on small fights is the day I started becoming successful & so much more content." Some fights are not worth your time..... Choose what you fight for wisely.

This is an interesting idea from a friend: This is something I want to start, to. keep a "Blessing bag" in my car, in case I find someone in need. You can make these up with items from the Dollar Tree such as gloves, thermal socks, beef sticks, crackers, candy bars, toothpaste, toothbrush, wipes, deodorant, snacks and other items that may help someone who is homeless or in a bad way. It is just a thoughtful, inspiring thing to do. This is something we are going to start doing from now on. Thank you to the ones that did this long before us, for being such a giving, loving, caring person! Random acts of kindness take very little to change the life of just one person 🙂

Quote of the Day: “Compassion asks us to go where it hurts, to enter into the places of pain, to share in brokenness, fear, confusion, and anguish. Compassion challenges us to cry out with those in misery, to mourn with those who are lonely, to weep with those in tears. Compassion requires us to be weak with the weak, vulnerable with the vulnerable, and powerless with the powerless. Compassion means full immersion in the condition of being human.” ― Henri J.M. Our parents and staff members received this email regarding the EO's. If you did not receive the email, please check your email address in PowerSchool. Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff: We hope this message finds you and your families healthy and safe. As you know, educational plans around the state of Michigan remain very fluid due to COVID-19 pandemic. Changes continue to occur as we respond to new directives from the Governor's Office, the Michigan Department of Education and the various Health Departments. Late Friday afternoon, October 2, the Michigan Supreme Court issued a decision that Governor Whitmer did not possess authority under the Emergency Management Act to declare a state of emergency based on the COVID-19 pandemic after April 30, 2020. As a result, the Court concluded that "the executive orders issued by the Governor in response to the COVID-19 pandemic lack any basis under Michigan law." Soon after the decision was announced, Governor Whitmer issued a statement noting “that this ruling does not take effect for at least 21 days, and until then, my emergency declaration and orders retain the force of law.” It’s only natural to be asking what this news means for our school operations since our Preparedness Plan is based on executive orders that were issued well after April 30th. It is not fair to our parents and students who made their decision for in person school or remote learning, based on those orders, to change the procedures on this short of notice. For the safety of our students and staff, at this time Columbia School District is not altering the health and safety protocols within our Preparedness Plan, which is posted on our school district’s website. To be clear, face coverings will still be required for face-to-face students and staff. In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to gain information regarding how Governor Whitmer’s Return to School Roadmap is impacted by the court’s decision. Meanwhile, we want to convey that all protocols remain in place until further notice. If you have questions or feedback, you can always email us at ReturnToLearn@myeagles.org and someone will get back to you soon. Thank you for your continued patience as we work our way through this pandemic together. Sincerely, Pamela Campbell Superintendent

Quote of the Day: 💛🦅💙 I love this analogy! You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere. Why did you spill the coffee? "Well because someone bumped into me, of course!" Wrong answer. You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea. *Whatever is inside the cup, is what will spill out.* Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it, until you get rattled. *So we have to ask ourselves... “what's in my cup?" When life gets tough, what spills over? Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility? Or anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions? You choose! 💯 Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation; and kindness, gentleness and love for others. 🙌🏻🙏🏻🙌🏻

Quote of the Day: 💙🦅💛 “If I never had a day 1, I would have never reached my someday. If I never decided enough is enough, I would be worse off now than I was then. If I gave up when it was hard or I didn’t feel like doing it, I would’ve never seen what I’m capable of. If I never decided that an investment in my health was worth the sacrifice, I know with my health history I would have less fun medical expenses now. It’s hard- yes, but when did doing hard things become bad? Hard builds character, resilience and grit. Hard proves you’re capability and strengthens confidence. Hard makes you appreciate the work you’re putting in and the results that come from it! We encourage our kids to push through and study for that exam and work hard in practice- so why wouldn’t we show them we can do the same? On my day one, I couldn’t do more than one push up, or any kind of a weighted crunch. When you prove to yourself you can get there, you will feel unstoppable!”-Becky B.

DEAR CES FAMILIES, The teachers and staff at Columbia Elementary School are so excited to welcome our Little Eagles back to school! Everyone at CES has been working diligently to prepare for this school year. This letter includes many details and updates to help us all work together to ensure our students stay safe, happy and successful. STAFF CHANGES We welcome the following staff members and those who are switching to new positions: Alesha Jones, Playground Aide - Mrs. Kelly Rentschler, Virtual Teacher - Adonia Senkewitz, Custodian - Jean David, Cafeteria - Kathy Jenness, Kindergarten ARRIVAL WINDOW To allow students to practice social distancing in the hallway at the start of school, we are asking families to drop off their child during the window of time: 7:45-8:15 a.m. All students must remain in their cars or bus until 7:45 a.m. CES doors will open at 7:45 a.m. Please do not drop off children before 7:45 a.m. as there is no adult supervision available until 7:45 a.m. Keeping children safe is our priority! FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL On the first day of school the entrance doors to our hallways are limited to staff members and students only. We will have many staff members on hand to make sure your Little Eagle gets to the correct classroom. Our Kindergarten families are invited to drop off their child at the outside classroom teacher’s door, where you waited in line to meet your teacher at the K Open House. DISMISSAL If your child will be picked up using our pick-up loop, please display the picture of the yellow car with your child’s last name and teacher’s name in your front passenger side window. When you arrive, your child’s last name will be displayed in their classroom. They will walk from their classroom out the front entrance. Several adults will be available to help your child enter your car from the curbside. You will not need to get out of your vehicle. We appreciate your patience with the pick-up loop the first week of school. It takes longer than normal because it is unfamiliar to many the first week. Please click here to see KINDERGARTEN ONLY arrival/dismissal information. You will notice a BACKPACK tag placed on your child’s backpack the first day of school. This allows our staff to ensure your child is going to the correct location during dismissal (BUS #, PICK UP LOOP, WALKER DOOR, PRESCHOOL SIBLING PICK UP). Please consider leaving this tag on your child’s backpack. CES ARRIVAL WINDOW 7:45 -8:15 a.m. CES DISMISSAL WINDOW 2:30 - 3:00 p.m BREAKFAST PROGRAM All students will be given a free grab-and-go breakfast in their classroom upon arrival. Students who have already eaten breakfast at home can save their breakfast as a snack for later in the day. LUNCH PROGRAM Lunch costs $2.65 daily, which includes milk. If you pack your child’s lunch they can purchase milk ONLY for 50 cents. Please consider filling out a free or reduced lunch application even if you are unsure that you will qualify. Please click here to apply for free or reduced lunch. You can also get a paper copy in our CES office. If your child qualifies, it helps your family and it also helps our school! This information is kept confidential. Students and classmates are not identified in any way by how they pay for their lunch. Students will eat in the cafeteria with their classroom cohort. They will be safely distanced from students in other classrooms. Students are welcome to bring lunch from home. School lunch will be delivered to their lunch table. Preschool students will eat lunch in their classrooms. CHILDCARE & PRESCHOOL If you are interested in childcare or preschool, please call Mrs. McLaury at 517-592-9753 for more information. We offer childcare beginning at 6:30 a.m. and after school until 6:00 p.m. Our tuition-paid Preschool begins on Monday, September 14th. Our GSRP Preschool begins on Monday, October 5th. BLUE COMMUNICATIONS FOLDER Every student at CES uses a blue communications folder daily. Please check this folder each night and send it back to school every day even if it is empty. This is the main way our staff communicates with you. You can also send important notes to school in their blue folder. VOLUNTEERING AT CES Volunteers and guests are not permitted at this time. We look forward to seeing our volunteers soon! PTO CES has a dynamic PTO that supports education in our school. If you would like to be involved with this wonderful organization, please email Casey Stein, PTO president CaseyNichole2000@yahoo.com or call/text 517-240-8583. ATTENDANCE If your child will be absent or late for school, please call 517-592-7552 and leave a voicemail. Please remember to ask for a doctor’s note if you take your child to see a doctor. This helps with how we are required to document their absence. We all agree that the more consistently children attend school, the more they learn. We appreciate your help in making attendance at school a priority. Virtual students are required to participate in their assignments and activities each day. Attendance is taken and we are required to report truancy in the same manner as an In Person learner. MEDICATION AT SCHOOL Parents or guardians must bring any medication to the school office in the original container and fill out a medication form. Students are not allowed to transport any medication, including cough drops. SAFETY PROTOCOLS DUE TO COVID 19 Students will wear masks at drop off & dismissal, in hallways and in common areas. Students are permitted to take off their mask when they remain with their classroom cohort and do not come in contact with students from another class. All CES students will be given two Columbia Eagles washable masks. Students will wash or sanitize their hands frequently & have fun learning while practicing good hygiene. Students will use their own personal set of supplies. Shared items will be limited and will be cleaned after each use. To allow families and students to social distance, families can drop off their Little Eagle anytime between 7:45 - 8:15 a.m. The dismissal window will be from 2:30-3:00 p.m. Students who become ill at school will go to “The Cozy Cabin” and be cared for by our support staff until a family member arrives. Students will enjoy daily recess in colorfully designated zones with their cohort classroom. Each day of the week students will rotate with their cohort to their newly assigned zone. Colorful, breakaway lanyards will be worn at recess to match the students’ assigned zones. Lanyards will be kept at school. If your child accidentally brings their lanyard home, please have them wear it to school the next day. VIRTUAL LEARNER INFORMATION Chrome Book Distribution Chrome books for Virtual learners can be picked up at the CES front porch on Wednesday, August 26th from 1-3 p.m. This will count as your attendance for the ½ day of school that day. Lunch Pick Up Information Lunch pickup for Virtual learners will be from 10 -11a.m. at the high school front entrance loop. You do not need to pre-order meals. Just drive up! Any virtual students that need meals delivered can have meals delivered on Wednesday as well. If you need delivery, please email our Food Service Director at Lindsay.Kandell@myeagles.org. Trimester Commitment Information Our Virtual Learners have the option to switch to In Person Learning on November 23rd and March 1st when each new trimester begins. TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION Virtual Learners at CES Students who are virtual learners who need to borrow a device, please fill out the technology form below and pay $40 for insurance. Insurance for families who qualify for free/reduced lunch is $5. Devices can be picked up on Wednesday, August 26th from 1-3 p.m. under the covered porch front entrance at CES. In Person Learners at CES Students who are In Person learners who need to borrow a device, in case we go to distance learning at some point in the year, please fill out the technology form and pay $40 for insurance. Insurance for families who qualify for free/reduced lunch is $5. Our ISD technology team will prepare those students' assigned devices with the appropriate filters so if/when the student is required to switch to distance learning they can take their device home. We use our devices daily at CES so chrome books for In Person Learners remain at school unless distance learning occurs. If the student is never required to switch to distance learning, the insurance is non-refundable. COLUMBIA CONNECTION - We look forward to connecting with you! To: Our Jackson County Community From: Jackson County Superintendent Association Re: Return to School Planning Date: July 25, 2020 The Jackson County Superintendent Association has been meeting regularly throughout the summer to support each other and work collaboratively on developing safe, responsive, and educationally sound plans for returning to school this fall. This is very challenging work, but know we are committed to making sure every student has the opportunity for a safe, quality educational experience and every staff member involved in providing that experience is supported and provided a safe work environment. Each district is working with their staff members to develop plans for in-person instruction, on-line instruction and the ability to move between these options depending on the extent of the Covid virus and/or mandates from state authorities. Districts are also partnering with the Jackson County Health Department to make sure we are benefiting from their expertise. Because each district has unique capabilities and challenges as they meet the expectations of their constituents, not every district plan will look exactly the same. Therefore, you can expect that specific information concerning your district’s plan will come directly from the district your student is attending. However, all districts are coordinating their efforts to make sure an individual district plan does not prevent a student from having access to a countywide, center-based option such as the Jackson Area Career Center. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we take this time to work with our staff members on developing these plans. We also invite your input and hope you will participate in the various surveys that have been sent out by districts/schools. All school employees take very seriously the trust you have put in them to provide your students with the best possible education. While the coming school year will not be without its challenges, your local districts are approaching their planning with optimistic enthusiasm, and look forward to serving your children and the greater community. Sincerely, Dr. Pamela Campbell, Columbia School District Ms. Rebecca Hutchinson, Concord Community Schools Ms. Sandy Maxson, da Vinci Schools Mr. Stephen Doerr, East Jackson Community Schools Dr. Ryle Kiser, Grass Lake Community Schools Mr. John Denney, Hanover-Horton Schools Mr. Kevin Oxley, Jackson County Intermediate School District Mr. Jeffrey Beal, Jackson Public Schools Mr. Brady Cook, Michigan Center School District Mr. James Graham, Napoleon Community Schools Mr. Geoff Bontrager, Northwest Community Schools Mr. Bob Cassiday, Springport Public Schools Mr. Scott Leach, Vandercook Lake Schools Mr. Michael Smajda, Western School District

Quote of the Day: 💙💛🦅 - Savanna Spindelman 🌟"Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: 1 - The future can be better than the present, and 2 - I have the power to do so"🌟 During times like these, we all need to look toward the bright side, and understand that we all have the power to make the future better than the past ever was. It's easy to fall into a rut, and feel like you are powerless, or that things may never be the same again. But we all have to believe and use the power that we have to design our own destiny. I found this quote today and it really hits home with what the world, and I personally, am dealing with during this pandemic: "Be stubborn about your goals, and flexible about your methods" When you set a goal for yourself, you must follow through with it - but sometimes that goal is not achieved the same way you believed it would when you first made that goal. That is perfectly alright - The world is constantly changing, and so are we. You never know; maybe you will find that you can dream larger or you can find a more specific dream/goal to follow. The world is ours, we all can make it into whatever we want - and a little bump in the road will make those who believe in their dreams to believe much stronger in their dream, and to focus on it harder than ever before. Keep dreaming and keep setting goals for yourself. Anything is possible 🌟

Quote of the Day: Always be true to yourself! In life you’ll meet a lot of mean and disrespectful people. If they hurt you, tell yourself that it’s because issues they have and you’re on a different level than they are, which will keep you from reacting to their insensitivity. There is nothing worse than bitterness and vengeance. Walk away, keep your dignity and always be true to yourself. - Sherry Hynes

From Ryan Irvine: Whether you were a knuckle head or a straight A student, we all had a few special faculty members throughout our school years. For me, one of those special people was a little lady that is tougher than nails & sweeter than pie ( Mrs. Lois Little )... Mrs. Little broke her collar bone a little over a month ago & is healing nicely. I am sure she would love any cards from faculty members & former Brooklyn elementary students that knew her. If you are in the spirit of putting a smile on her face go ahead & send her one. Her address is, 7300 cement city Rd/highway.

A Teacher for All Seasons By Joanna Fuchs A teacher is like Spring, Who nurtures new green sprouts, Encourages and leads them, Whenever they have doubts. A teacher is like Summer, Whose sunny temperament Makes studying a pleasure, Preventing discontent. A teacher is like Fall, With methods crisp and clear, Lessons of bright colors And a happy atmosphere. A teacher is like Winter, While it's snowing hard outside, Keeping students comfortable, As a warm and helpful guide. Teacher, you do all these things, With a pleasant attitude; You're a teacher for all seasons, And you have my gratitude! THANK YOU TEACHERS FOR ALL YOU DO!
